Wicking, Filtration LinesWickingWicking is the process by which many spills or what appears as a spot or stain re-appear. Wicking causes that spill, which is largely in the backing of the carpet or the pad below, to surface as a re-appearing spot. When moisture is applied to the spot to clean away the problem, the moisture creates a 'channel' for the spill to surface. You clean again and again but the spot keeps re-appearing! Realize that this is normal and eventually this spill will "wick" away. Low moisture carbonated cleaning, like Chem-Dry, will minimize this phenomena through quick drying. Another way which virtually eliminates the problem (spill) is Deep Pad Extraction. This actually cleans the pad below the carpet and a service we can perform as part of carpet cleaning.
Filtration lines.Filtration Lines are those black or grey lines under doors or at edges of doors and steps. They are caused by dirt, dust, soot and pollutants circulating in the air and being sifted through every crack, and the associated carpet attached to it, throughout the house. Usually filtration lines do not appear for many years because the deposition is not noticed. Unfortunately, in most cases, these lines will not be cleaned away. The fibers have been 'dyed' (any spot left for months will dye the fiber affected, a slow but effective way of dyeing). The fibers associated with this line are now a darker color. Cleaning will lighten this line a bit, but only the more recent soils will be released. The lines will be clean, but noticeable. |
